Understanding Miscarriage
A miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion, is the loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. It is a common complication, occurring in about 10-20% of known pregnancies. Most miscarriages happen because the fetus isn’t developing normally. Various factors can contribute to miscarriage, including genetic issues, health conditions, and lifestyle factors.
Symptoms of Miscarriage
- Vaginal Bleeding: Light spotting or heavy bleeding.
- Abdominal Pain: Cramping or pain in the lower abdomen.
- Fluid or Tissue Passing: Passage of fluid or tissue from the vagina.
- Decreased Pregnancy Symptoms: A sudden reduction in pregnancy symptoms like nausea or breast tenderness.
Diagnostic Procedures
- Pelvic Examination: To check for dilation of the cervix.
- Ultrasound: To confirm the presence or absence of fetal heartbeat and development.
- Blood Tests: To measure human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels, which may be lower than expected in a miscarriage.
- Tissue Tests: If tissue has passed, it may be sent to a lab to confirm a miscarriage and rule out other causes
